L03, Task 4

The role I played during the post production stage:

During the post-production stage of a music video titled Runcee - Make Room, that I edited with a group, I used various editing skills to help give my final product a high quality aesthetic for the audience as I did the majority of the editing.

Contribution to our music video:

We edited the music video as a group. The role I played was doing the majority of the cutting as well as changing opacity on certain effects to give the video a trippy look aesthetic. I also added in the title and had to keyframe it to make it move in to to the clips. I also changed the colour of some of the clips as the intro clip has a slight red silhouette to make our overall production look unique. I also did some jump cuts to make our overall video fast paces, to match the hip-hop genre and the speed of the beat.

Treatment for Runcee - Make Room, music video

The Brief

We've produced a music video that promotes Runcee. The purpose of a treatment is to show the client awareness that we know what we have been assigned in order to create a music video that is designed for our target audience. In addition to this we are using the treatment in order to indicate that our  music video idea has structure in order to gain more funding from the client.

Target Audience

We will be producing a music video in the style of an independent warp style music video.

The target audience for this music video we're going to produce will be aimed at people from the ages of 18  within the ABC1 category on the demographic and scale. The reason we chose this target audience is because some of the lyrical content within this song is considered explicit, therefore inappropriate for younger viewers, however younger viewers are likely to watch it too.

Segment synopsis and how it relates to the brief

This music video will be a performance video, this is due to the fact that we believe it would be easier to present the music video in this style. This is because I believe a performance video can truly capture the environment and the background of the artist, therefore relating to the genre of music being preformed.

Contingencies

In case something was to go wrong I have considered a few other artists that would gladly offer me their music to use for the music video, but first I would need to gain their written permission before I could use their audio.

If my actors are unable to attend a shoot, or have decided that they don't want to be in the video anymore I must first ensure that I have got them to sign a release form. The release form makes it less stressful for the production team by not having them find a new audio, just a new actor.

I must also ensure that I have a few back up actors, this will help if any of the actors decide to opt out of the music video.

In case a location is deemed as not suitable based on environmental factors. I think it is smart if we consider different locations if our desired location is not suitable. This is because it doesn't limit us in terms of when it comes to filming.

Key Milestones

  • All the planning will be done by the 5th of February
  • Filming will start the 8th of February
  • Editing will be the 18th of March
  • Launch date will be the 22nd of March
Equipment

The equipment we will be needing to make our music video a success will be:
  • 1X Canon 650D
  • Tripod
  • Costumes the model is wearing, this will relate to the genre of the music because grime is seen as street type music so street clothes would seem suitable for this music video.
Locations

Millhouses Park
Matilda Street

Models/actor

Shayi Aluwoade will be peforming in the place of Runcee, due to the fact that Charles is currently unavailable for the shoot at this current moment in time. Shayi will be pretending to be Runcee for this video.
Health And Safety Consideration
-Weather conditions
Slippery surfaces and paths could be hazardous when preforming and could result to
the artist falling over whilst preforming.
-Camera damages

we must wear the correct footware when using the cameras in order to reduce the risk of falling with it. We must also wear the camera strap in order to firmly secure the camera.
For each location we much produce:
A location recce form. This is a form informing us on if the chosen location is suitable for the shoot.
We need photographic evidence of what the location looks like.
And we also need to produce a Risk Assessment.
Legal, Ethical, Scheduling and Certification

We need to gain permission from Runcee in order to use his audio for the music video. If we do not seek permission from the artist be are breaking the copyright law and we could end up getting prosecuted for it.

Distribution

Our group will be releasing this music video on YouTube, this is due to the fact that it is considered a very popular site in terms of videos and music, and it is also free to use. Another reason why we decided to upload this video on YouTube is due to the fact that wqe have quite a young target audience, which means quite a lot of them use technology such as YouTube on the regular so it would be convenient for them if we used YouTube in order to distribute our final video. Another site that we've thought about distributing our music video on is Twitter, yet again based on the fact that younger people that are within our target audience will be using applications like Twitter so it would be convenient for them to watch the videos that are uploaded on Twitter. The final means of distributing the music video would be uploading the video on facebook, there are millions of users that use Facebook daily, so by uploading the video on a group page on facebook we're able to attract Runcees followers and keep them informed on other videos coming up.

The treatment helped us as a group plan our music video, and also provided backup plans, and also adds as a checklist in a way, so that no mistakes are made while editing.

Gantt Chart

The gantt chart helped me plan out which tasks that I needed to do, so that no tasks were left incomplete

Production Schedule
This is the production schedule which helped organise the group as it told us what tasks ned to be completed, and really helped us asa group to plan out the tasks needed to be completed.

Storyboards
These are some of the storyboards that I made for our group, these helped me plan out each shot as they had detailed drawings and also stated what shots and angled needed to be taken.

Edit decision list
The edit decision list really helped us as a group while editing as it helped us decide what effects and transitions to apply to out production and what effects we did not need to apply.

Footage Log

The footage log helped us as a group what footage was useable, and what footage should be re-filmed which was vital as if we did not make a footage log it may have been to late, as we could of put unusable footage in the software

Development of my skills
While editing the production within the group I really gained experience in editing and learnt many new techniques throughout using adobe premiere, for example I learnt how to colour grade, as well as use the speed effect so slow down and speed up the clips to give it a nice aesthetic. My skills also improved in placement as I really started to learn the structure of a music video and where and when clips should be placed, to make the group music video as professional looking as possible. I also learned how to stabilize the video as the footage was slightly shakey on some clips which therefore required me to make the camera movement look smoothe

Additional roles
I also worked alongside Keenen on manipulating the sound as I had to equalize some of the audio, in order to make the music connote the video and sound as high quality as possible. I also removed the any unwanted audio frequencies and unwanted sounds on the audio track as the intro was to long in our opinion so we therefore shortened it to make the video connote the audio more as the videos intro was not as long as the songs intro.

LO2 - Task 3: Understand the skills to carry out the role of an editor

An editor has a key role in the overall production of a media product. For example the Editor has to take raw footage from the original video shoot, where footage was recorded, and then they have to polish it up for it look acceptable to be broadcasted to an audience. To make this footage looks professional, the editor first has to import all of the raw footage into the software which in my case was Adobe Premiere pro, however their are alternatives like Sony Vegas. The editor then has select the clips that he wants to use, and will then proceed to select what is called the razor tool in Adobe Premiere and will separate any unwanted footage from the clip by slicing it. There are also other effects like the cross-dissolve effect which can help the overall aesthetic of the production, and tools like the warp stabilizer which helps shaky footage look stable. Colour grading is also another thing that can be used in adobe after effects, as you can select the colour balance tool to add more of a certain colour to enhance the production. Once the production has been edited and has been done it must be rendered, and then saved at a high setting for the best quality, which would usually be at 1080p and MP4.

Written communication:

I had some experience with written communication in relation to editing as I had to interact with the artist for the music documentary I edited, being the beats lounge for example as I had to message him to debate certain editing techniques that I was thinking of using as I was considering changing the colour balance. I also had to ask the artist what music he would like in between the clips, as sometimes it is good to get other peoples views as this can enhance the overall creativity of the editing process. I messaged the artist on social media, for example Facebook, as well as emailing him multiple times.

Verbal communication:
Verbal communication can also vert important to editing as for example while working in a group, it is a very valuable skill to share opinions as someone else in the group could have an idea that really complements yours. An example of this is when I did duke of Edinburgh a few years ago, I had to work in team and this was very vital to how we progressed throughout the expedition as we had to share out items in a team to balance the weight out and so that it was equal for everyone to carry.

Practical production:
While editing the media production, it is vital in many aspects to make sure you have selected all of the clips that you want to use as sometimes it can be a long process browsing through a large amount of unwanted footage. I always have all the clips I wan't to use in a folder as this makes it easier. Once all the wanted clips are imported, I usually know what effects and transitions that I am going to add as I usually start off with some cuts, and sometimes add a cross dissolve to make it fade nicely into the next clip. I also use the colour correction tool often to enhance the colours to make it look aesthetically pleasing to the audience. Here is an example of a production I edited using similar techniques to the ones that i mentioned.

L01: Task 2

I will be evaluating two job roles, one being an Editor and the other being a Sound Technician.

Editor:

An editor has a key role as he has to assemble all of the raw footage from the original shoot and turn it  into an aesthetically pleasing final product.
The equipment required is a computer with the software Adobe Premiere, however there are alternatives like Sony Vegas, and for additional effects you can use Adobe After Effects.
To complete the tasks required you must develop skills using the software in order to edit it to a professional standard and to make sure that no time is waisted. It also requires some creativity from the individual, for example it helps when you know in your mind where you are going to place the clips for the best possible product for yourself and for the audience

The key job role of an editor is assembling the recorded raw footage from production into a finished product that is suitable for broadcasting.
The equipment used to complete these tasks are editing software. There is a range of different editing softwares ranging from basic like Windows Live Movie Maker to more professional such as Adobe Premiere Pro CS6/CC, Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro.
To carry out this job role you are required to have proficient skills in using the software so you are able to perform a function with no issue or time lost trying to find the right tool to cut the clip or add a keyframe for example. You must also have a mind for editing, so you can look at a clip and see how it can be enhanced to be more pleasing for the viewers to watch and so it can make the overall quality of the production better.

I feel as if this job role would really match my abilities as I do have past experience in editing products to a professional standard, as I have edited a Musical Documentary for a producer named Morgon as well as a music video for a artist. Editing these things really helped me develop my skill-set as I learned a lot of techniques on the way. In the future I hope that my career involves Editing, and I hope to gain more experience in the future.

Sound Technician:

A sound technician has many key roles which mainly include taking care of the equipment to mix and reproduce sound and also operating the equipment. Sound technicians are found within multiple outlets including Film, Theatre, Audio outlets such as radios, and even online outlets like Soundcloud.Sound technicians use software such as Adobe Audition and Logic.

Sound technicians have to work on production and post production. During the production of the media piece the sound technician is to make sure that all the sound is working during the production. During post production the sound technician has to really polish the sound which requires the technician to use external plugins like a equaliser for example to mix the sound. A high level of skill is required for this job role as it requires a lot of close monitoring of sound as without a technician the sound would not polished and would not be nice for the audience to listen to.

I think this job role would really suit me as I have an avid interest in music and have made musical instrumentals before, so therefore I know the whole process of mixing vocals or any sounds that need to be mixed and on my musical documentary that I Created, I had to mix the vocals with the producers instrumental.

Comparing Roles/jobs

After comparing the role of an editor and a sound technician I can infer that both roles have a vital role to the production of a media product, as all though to some, at first thought visuals may seem more important, sound plays a vital role in how the audience receive the final media production as sound complements visuals in many ways. The jobs are however different in many aspects as the both require different skillset's and different knowledge of software as audio software is different to video production software, for example comparing Adobe Audition to Premiere
