I will be evaluating two job roles, one being an Editor and the other being a Sound Technician.
Editor:
An editor has a key role as he has to assemble all of the raw footage from the original shoot and turn it into an aesthetically pleasing final product.
The equipment required is a computer with the software Adobe Premiere, however there are alternatives like Sony Vegas, and for additional effects you can use Adobe After Effects.
To complete the tasks required you must develop skills using the software in order to edit it to a professional standard and to make sure that no time is waisted. It also requires some creativity from the individual, for example it helps when you know in your mind where you are going to place the clips for the best possible product for yourself and for the audience
The key job role of an editor is assembling the recorded raw footage from production into a finished product that is suitable for broadcasting.
The equipment used to complete these tasks are editing software. There is a range of different editing softwares ranging from basic like Windows Live Movie Maker to more professional such as Adobe Premiere Pro CS6/CC, Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro.
To carry out this job role you are required to have proficient skills in using the software so you are able to perform a function with no issue or time lost trying to find the right tool to cut the clip or add a keyframe for example. You must also have a mind for editing, so you can look at a clip and see how it can be enhanced to be more pleasing for the viewers to watch and so it can make the overall quality of the production better.
I feel as if this job role would really match my abilities as I do have past experience in editing products to a professional standard, as I have edited a Musical Documentary for a producer named Morgon as well as a music video for a artist. Editing these things really helped me develop my skill-set as I learned a lot of techniques on the way. In the future I hope that my career involves Editing, and I hope to gain more experience in the future.
Sound Technician:
A sound technician has many key roles which mainly include taking care of the equipment to mix and reproduce sound and also operating the equipment. Sound technicians are found within multiple outlets including Film, Theatre, Audio outlets such as radios, and even online outlets like Soundcloud.Sound technicians use software such as Adobe Audition and Logic.
Sound technicians have to work on production and post production. During the production of the media piece the sound technician is to make sure that all the sound is working during the production. During post production the sound technician has to really polish the sound which requires the technician to use external plugins like a equaliser for example to mix the sound. A high level of skill is required for this job role as it requires a lot of close monitoring of sound as without a technician the sound would not polished and would not be nice for the audience to listen to.
I think this job role would really suit me as I have an avid interest in music and have made musical instrumentals before, so therefore I know the whole process of mixing vocals or any sounds that need to be mixed and on my musical documentary that I Created, I had to mix the vocals with the producers instrumental.
Comparing Roles/jobs
After comparing the role of an editor and a sound technician I can infer that both roles have a vital role to the production of a media product, as all though to some, at first thought visuals may seem more important, sound plays a vital role in how the audience receive the final media production as sound complements visuals in many ways. The jobs are however different in many aspects as the both require different skillset's and different knowledge of software as audio software is different to video production software, for example comparing Adobe Audition to Premiere
